CBS MarketWatch.com

As the most visited financial site on the Web, CBS MarketWatch.com does more than just report the news. Its growing team of experienced financial journalists in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., London and Tokyo break the stories that move the market, then follow up with real-time coverage of events as they unfold around the globe. Throughout the trading day, industry experts put it all into perspective with original content written from an insider's point of view. Windows 2000 makes it possible for CBS MarketWatch to deliver.
Reliable & Scalable
Initially, MarketWatch evaluated Windows 2000 in a mixed environment of servers running Windows 2000 and Windows NT® 4.0. Windows 2000 provided the reliability and scalability MarketWatch desired. "Windows 2000 brought us increased server reliability," said Larry Kramer, chairman and chief executive officer of MarketWatch.com. "With Windows 2000 we can focus on new and better ways of gathering information and getting it to the servers, rather than spending time improving server performance and reliability itself."
"Our initial deployment of Windows 2000 impressed us in two key areas," says Jamie Thingelstad, chief technology officer for MarketWatch.com. "The scalability and performance of IIS services and our XML infrastructure was much better on our quad Dell servers. We also found that the overall reliability of the system is much improved compared to our experiences of Windows NT."
Terminal Services Improves Data Center Management
While a third party product was needed for terminal services on Windows NT 4.0, they are now integrated with Windows 2000. MarketWatch.com can manage over 70 servers at three separate data centers, all from a single point.
"We deployed a number of Windows 2000-based servers and found that we were able to remotely manage those servers easily and efficiently with no extra products," says Thingelstad. "Also, Windows 2000 terminal services have proven to be a great value add for managing our datacenter and administering those machines effectively."
Integrated Platform
Windows 2000 provides a platform for building and running rich Web applications and solutions. "We use Microsoft products in a number of different locations," says Thingelstad. "We use SQL Server for the back end to service our database requests, we use Windows 2000 on both the front end and back end of our service and we use Windows 2000 Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 with Active Server Pages to tie together all the COM applications we built and present them to the end user. We use Microsoft Transaction Server to house some of those COM applications and we use an XML system, both internally for data presentation on our own systems and externally with our partners."
"We are adding a million people a month to our CBS MarketWatch.com properties and served 1.5 billion page views during 1999 alone," says Kramer. "Because of Windows 2000, we are going to be able to keep up with that growth and effectively scale and manage our business in the future."
